Actions to Improve Employer Attraction and Retention of Diverse Talent

Through funding from the Department of Economic and Community Development, “Actions to Improve Employer Attraction and Retention of Diverse Talent” will broaden the talent pool of key industries by improving equitable workforce participation in Maine for the long term. To launch this work, SMWI is hosting Engage Maine’s Global Talent: Practical Tools for Recruiting & Retaining Diverse Talent—an action-driven forum offering strategies and cultural competency frameworks to build more inclusive hiring practices and supportive workplace environments for internationally trained professionals.

Morning workshops address workplace biases that affect employee success and overall team culture, and transform recruitment through inclusive job descriptions. This foundational approach establishes equitable opportunities and environments where all professionals can thrive from the outset.

Afternoon workshops build sustainable systems through mentorship and career development, while exploring how intercultural communication styles impact workplace dynamics. This comprehensive approach fosters holistic developmental relationships with team members, regardless of background.

The December 4th forum is the first of several no-cost resources SMWI will provide to support employers in building more inclusive workplaces. Additional tools, trainings, and materials will be released throughout the initiative and be updated here.
